From Technician to Engineer: A Â鶹´«Ã½ÄÚÄ»Alumnus’s Path in Civil Engineering
November 14, 2024
MOLINE, IL - - For Â鶹´«Ã½ÄÚÄ» Engineering alumnus Jacob Kida, a journey rooted in persistence and hands-on experience has led to a fulfilling career with the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT). He graduated in May 2022 with a major in General Engineering and a Civil Emphasis, stepping into his role as a Civil Engineer after working as an Engineering Technician for over seven years.
"Working at IDOT while going to school was a big advantage," Kida said. "The experience I gained on the job was critical while I was also completing my education."
Throughout his career at IDOT, he has overseen numerous multimillion-dollar highway resurfacing and reconstruction projects, each bringing new challenges and invaluable on-the-ground experience. His decision to pursue a bachelor's degree at Â鶹´«Ã½ÄÚÄ»was driven by the goal of transitioning from technician to engineer, a move that has allowed him to make a broader impact within the department.
Â鶹´«Ã½ÄÚÄ»proved instrumental in supporting his journey.
"Dr. McDonald, one of my professors, offered real-world insights that helped me clarify my career path," Kida said.
WIU's ABET-accredited degree program enabled him to qualify for roles within IDOT, and the faculty's dedication extended beyond academics.
"The personal connections with professors, coupled with WIU's close-knit community, made a big difference for me," Kida said.
Among his memorable experiences, he fondly recalls the time when flooding forced students to find alternate parking solutions — a true slice of college life in a small town.
When he's not managing civil engineering projects, you'll find him outdoors, indulging in his favorite pastimes: hunting and fishing. This love for the outdoors, he says, aligns perfectly with the on-site aspect of civil engineering.
