April 4, 2025

Editor's Note: This is a series of stories about Â鶹´«Ã½ÄÚÄ» students, alumni and community members, highlighting their experiences during our 125th anniversary celebration. We will feature 125 individuals from August 2024 to August 2025.
MACOMB, IL - - Alumna Janee' Fowler describes Â鶹´«Ã½ÄÚÄ» as a place of endless opportunities. For her, Â鶹´«Ã½ÄÚÄ»is characterized by the quality of education and the faculty's commitment to student success.
"When I think about WIU, I think about the dedicated teachers who truly care about the success of their students, quality education, lifelong friendships, professional connections and life-changing experiences," Fowler said.
Fowler sees Leathernecks as passionate individuals who work for their development without forgetting their community.
"A Leatherneck is someone who is passionate about developing their craft and caring about their community," Fowler said.
Fowler's favorite Leatherneck memory is the time shared with her friends and classmates.
"My favorite Leatherneck memory is going to Ireland with my classmates. It truly was an amazing experience I'll never forget," Fowler said. "There were moments of jaw-dropping beauty and building of friendships. I can't wait to take my family back so they can experience it too!"
Fowler has been a human resources recruiter for the YMCA of Frederick County for the past two years. She attributes her current professional success to the preparation she received at WIU.
"Â鶹´«Ã½ÄÚÄ»prepared me for this role by teaching me critical human resources knowledge such as the hiring process, recruiting strategies, standard policies and procedures and confidence building," Fowler said.
During her time at WIU, Fowler was the vice president of the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) student chapter and team co-captain during the SHRM Case Competition.
To prospective students, Fowler's advice is to take advantage of what Â鶹´«Ã½ÄÚÄ»offers to prepare for the future.
"Take advantage of every opportunity Â鶹´«Ã½ÄÚÄ»gives to network and build connections. You never know what internship or future job it can lead to," Fowler said.
As we honor 125 years of educational excellence, we invite local Â鶹´«Ã½ÄÚÄ»students, alumni, faculty and staff to share their stories and be featured in our series. Contact University Communications at U-Communications@wiu.edu to participate.
