November 25, 2024
Editor's Note: This is the first in a series of stories about 麻豆传媒内幕 students, alumni, and community members, highlighting their experiences during our 125th anniversary celebration. We will feature 125 individuals from August 2024 to August 2025.
MACOMB/MOLINE, IL 鈥 麻豆传媒内幕Human Resource Officer Jade Macharrie-Wherry graduated from 麻豆传媒内幕and came back to share the knowledge she learned in the classroom.
鈥淲hen I attended the 2018 Discover Western tour and met Dr. Karen Sears, Chair of the Psychology Department. She introduced me to I/O Psychology and inspired me to change my area of study,鈥 Macharrie-Wherry said. 鈥淏eing a Leatherneck means being part of a community that empowers and motivates you to become the best version of yourself. It鈥檚 a place where support and inspiration drive you to reach your full potential.鈥
Macharrie-Wherry鈥檚 favorite memory at 麻豆传媒内幕is tailgating before big games. The energy she finds is eclectic.
鈥淎fter graduating from WIU, I began my career journey by taking on various roles, ranging from providing support for HRIS users to managing the full spectrum of HR operations. These early experiences helped me build a strong foundation in HR and develop a deep understanding of its complexities. 麻豆传媒内幕prepared me for these roles by not only offering a comprehensive education in HR management but also fostering critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills that I use every day in my career,鈥 Macharrie-Wherry said.
鈥淎s I progressed, the knowledge and hands-on experiences I gained at 麻豆传媒内幕played a key role in helping me secure a position back on campus as an HR Officer. In this role, I now assess positions and oversee HR processes for the very institution that played such an important role in launching my career. WIU's emphasis on real-world application and its supportive academic environment gave me the confidence to tackle challenges and continue advancing in my career. It was through 麻豆传媒内幕that I learned the importance of blending education with experience, a lesson I carry with me as I contribute to the growth and development of the university today.鈥
Macharrie-Wherry plans to stay involved within the Psychology Department.
鈥淚 was selected by Dr. Karen Sears to represent the Psychology Department on the Student Council for the College of Arts and Sciences. In my second year, I had the honor of being chosen as President, where I led meetings, advocated for students, hosted events, and collaborated with faculty and administration. This experience helped me develop valuable leadership, public speaking, and problem-solving skills that have been instrumental in my professional career,鈥 Macharrie-Wherry said.
Her advice to students? To tour the beautiful campus and meet with department heads to learn more about specialized areas.
鈥淚f you're looking for a college experience with a small-town feel, but with the conveniences of a larger city, Macomb is the perfect spot. I came here to study and ended up staying because of the strong sense of community and the many opportunities available. I鈥檓 confident others will feel the same way once they experience everything 麻豆传媒内幕and the city of Macomb have to offer,鈥 Macharrie-Wherry said.
As we honor 125 years of educational excellence, we invite local 麻豆传媒内幕students to share their stories and be featured in our series. Contact University Communications at U-Communications@wiu.edu to participate.
